The Qantas of tomorrow looks very different to the Qantas of yesterday
I have very clear memories of visiting the Melbourne Airport observation deck – remember those? – as a kid with my grandfather, looking on in amazement at the Qantas Boeing 747 parked at the gate.
It was a 747SP – Granddad asked me what the ‘SP’ on the tail stood for – and I suspect the year was 1982. So my first encounter with a ‘Jumbo Jet’ was with an aircraft painted in Qantas’s iconic ochre and flying kangaroo livery – the same livery celebrated by the airline’s newly-delivered ‘retro’ painted 737.
