The May 1 raid on Osama bin Laden’s compound in the Pakistani city of Abbottabad was notable in that it revealed a previously unknown variant of the Sikorsky Black Hawk was operational with US Special Forces.
Images of the compound and its immediate surrounds taken the day after the raid were disseminated to a wide global media audience, and included those of a largely destroyed Black Hawk fuselage inside the main compound, and a relatively intact empennage and tail rotor assembly just outside the compound.
