Aviation’s struggle to keep up with WA’s FIFO boom

Western Australia’s resources sector workforce is increasing rapidly, with a consequent boom in fly-in/fly-out (FIFO) operations which has resulted in significant infrastructure and operational challenges for the aviation industry.

The size of the resources workforce in WA and the use of FIFO arrangements are sharply increasing. In 2011 the Chamber of Minerals and Energy Western Australia (CME) reported that 90,000 people work in the resources industry in WA, up from approximately 75,600 in 2009. The workforce is expected to peak in 2012, with around 119,500 people employed in the sector.
