Back to the future for two former partners … or not?

The speculation has been rife in Kuala Lumpur and Singapore over the past couple of months, and rightly so.

When Singapore Airlines and Malaysia Airlines suddenly announced in June they were committing to a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that would see them significantly step up co-operative ties, exploring a wide-ranging strategic partnership to build on their existing codeshare agreement that covers flights between Singapore and Malaysia, it not only brought on a sense of déjà vu among many observers but seemed to add strength to persistent reports the very future of Malaysia Airlines might be in doubt.
