Lasers, deep space, and Artemis II: Australia’s role in the new era of space exploration
Launched on April 1 2026, the Artemis II mission was a groundbreaking step forward in the ongoing exploration of the universe, marking the furthest point humans have ever travelled from Earth at over 1.2 million kilometres.
The first lunar crewed mission in over fifty years saw major international space collaborators coming together for cosmic exploration; the mission was launched from Florida, crewed by Americans and a Canadian, powered by the European Space Agency, and splashed down in California.
Australia’s role, though less visible, was integral to the success of Artemis II.
