
English as the Universal Language of Aviation
As anyone who has met him can attest, Aero Circus’ resident Instructor Fabrice is not a true-blue Aussie, at least in terms of his language. Whether he is an Australian pretending to be French, or a Frenchman pretending to be Australian is a matter for another article. But the fact remains, as a non-native English speaker he has a slightly different perspective on the use of English as the universal language of aviation to the rest of us ‘Aussies’. In this article he explores some of the issues that have arisen in aviation over the years despite the supposed common ground for communication. And the editors earned their wages turning it into something vaguely grammatically correct that is not limited to phrases contained in the AIPs
