Sydney Airport Celebrates 100 years
The lasting legacy of Nigel Love
Modified and painted to replicate Qantas’ first aircraft. The Sunbeam Dyak engine sourced from a blacksmiths shop in Mullumbimby replaced the original Clerget rotary engine. The aircraft was formerly RAAF A3-4 displayed at the Australian War Memorial, Canberra and has since been returned to the AWM. ERIC ALLEN
He immediately asked me had I considered the “bullock paddock” at Mascot as a possibility. I replied that I had never heard of it”. This response to an enquiry directed to a Sydney real estate agent provided the catalyst for the location and founding of the site for Sydney Airport. The enquirer was Nigel Love, a returned airman from World War I service, and the year was 1919. Love made his mark on several areas of Australian aviation, with one creating a lasting legacy.
