Could the Maharajah be returning to its roots? India’s Cabinet has finally bitten the bullet and given in-principle approval for disinvestment of the government’s stake in troubled and massively debt-ridden Air India.
Whether or not it comes down to full privatization or handing over the majority reins to a new majority stakeholder remains to be seen but those in power – Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and Minister of State for Civil Aviation Jayant Sinha – made no secret of their support for a sell-off.
