Making ends meet
Can a new minister clean up the “unsustainable mess” of defence acquisitions?
In the story of Hercules, the hero of Greek mythology was made to undertake 12 labours to make up for past crimes. The fifth task was to clean the Augean stables, which housed the single greatest number of cattle in the country and had never been cleaned. In the myth, Hercules diverted the flow of two rivers to wash the stables clean.
I don’t envy new Minister for Defence Senator David Johnston his Herculean labour of cleaning the “unsustainable mess” for which he is now responsible. Speaking at the Australian Strategic Policy Institute’s (ASPI) annual dinner in early December, Senator Johnston pledged no further cuts to Defence after the previous government’s “mismanagement” of the portfolio.
