How will China enforce its unilaterally declared air defence zone?

Memories of KAL 007 rekindled as China invokes new airspace controls

China’s surprise announcement in late November it has set up an East China Sea Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) means all commercial flights must inform Beijing of their routing in advance, and sparks tragic memories.

It is almost exactly 20 years since a Soviet Su-15TM fighter shot down Korean Air flight 007 just west of Sakhalin Island. The date was in fact September 1 1983 and all 269 passengers and crew on board perished. An official investigation concluded that the course deviation was likely caused by pilot error in configuring the inertial navigation system, leading to the flight straying off course and Soviet defence personnel suspecting it of being a US spy plane.
