A 92WG AP-3C sets off on a night time sortie from RAAF Base Townsville during Talisman Saber 2013.. DEFENCE
High tempo
The heavy operational demands of 92 wing
For any island nation, with the recent exception of the UK, protection of its maritime approaches is a cornerstone of national security and a prerequisite to the defence of its sovereignty.
The RAAF’s Number 92 Wing, headquartered at RAAF Base Edinburgh, South Australia, provides the Australian Defence Force (ADF) with a broad spectrum of long-range maritime patrol and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance. It does so using two squadrons of AP-3C Orions (10 and 11 squadrons), an operational conversion unit – 292SQN – and the recently transferred flight of Israeli-made Heron UAVs that are based in Amberley as 5 Flight, and previously with 82WG.
