Regional airports and the airlines
There is a convincing argument that air services and regional economic prosperity are closely – and inextricably – connected.
In 2005, when Newcastle Airport in NSW won the Australian Airport Association’s Regional Airport of the Year award, it culminated a period of significant investment in the development of competitive air services connecting the region with major eastern seaboard cities. What also resulted from a 335 per cent increase in passenger throughput was a corresponding increase in regional economic activity: a direct result of increased business, tourism and visiting friends and relatives (VFR)-related activity.
