On a Tiger hunt? Jetstar’s Sydney-Melbourne/Tullamarine services start on October 25. (Paul Sadler)
Low cost competition heats up on Sydney-Melbourne
Radical transformation could be on the way for Australia’s busiest air route after Qantas CEO Alan Joyce announced on August 19 that Jetstar will start flying between Sydney and Melbourne from October 25.
The new flights, which will operate five times daily with 177 seat A320s, appear to be aimed at reducing the penetration of Singapore Airlines-backed Tiger Airways, which launched its Sydney-Melbourne services on July 3. Owing to strong demand, the airline announced in July that it would increase its frequency between the two cities to up to nine daily services from October 25.
