Hanging on to Hawdon
The future of the Douglas DC-3 which operated Trans Australia Airlines’ first flight more than 50 years ago has been firmed up after Qantas announced a new partnership which will support the preservation and operation of the aircraft.
Announced on March 13 at the Australian International Airshow, the DC-3, which is registered VH-SBA and known since 1946 as Hawdon, will now be transferred to the Qantas Founders Memorial, which operates the Qantas Founders Outback Museum. QFM intends to keep the aircraft in flying condition, and Qantas has pledged money and engineering support for the aircraft for at least the next five years.
