Navy Planning To Acquire Maritime Helicopters For Anzac Frigates

The acquisition of 14 intermediate maritime helicopters for the Royal Australian Navy’s Anzac frigates is proceeding to plan, subject to budgetary approval.

The RAN helicopter requirement, Project Sea 1411, is for a helicopter capable of conducting surveillance by day and night, and in adverse weather conditions. The aircraft must be able to contribute to the objective of developing a real-time clearer picture of what is happening in the sea-air gap, particularly around northern Australia. Therefore it has been determined that the helicopter must have reasonable endurance, a 360° radar, FLIR (Forward Looking InfraRed system), ESM suite, Datalink, Air-to-Surface Missile, and capable of being fully operated by two crew members.
