Sydney Misses Out Again On CBD Heliport
The new NSW Premier, Bob Carr, in a news release dated April 10, 1995, has announced that the planned Sydney central business district heliport at Wharf 8 Pyrmont, will not proceed. As if to put the lid firmly on any chance of its revival, a further news release, on April 21, announces that Foxtel Limited, a News Limited/Telstra joint venture, will establish its digital cable TV headquarters on the site.
Dan Tyler, in a 1985 story headed “The Sorry Saga of Sydney’s Heliport” (Helo News, p.17 Nov/Dec 1985 AA), wrote, “… Nor is it by any means certain that Sydney will have an unrestricted CBD Heliport – State government promises over the years notwithstanding.” Nearly ten years later, Tyler says that he thought at the time Sydney might eventually have a CBD heliport, but feels now that the chances are rapidly receding. This, despite Premier Carr’s assurances that he would “seek a meeting with the Helicopter Association shortly to look at alternate sites for a Sydney heliport.”
This has been a classic case of so near, yet so far. Before the NSW elections, Sydney Community Helipark Pty Ltd (SCH), a wholly owned subsidiary of the Helicopter Association of Australia (HAA), had received development consent, and had all the necessary permissions, except for a minor matter related to demolition of buildings on the site, for the heliport. All that remained was the formal execution of a lease with the Maritime Services Board of NSW (MSB), the owners of the land in question.
