R44 Clears Faa Special Certification Review, But R22 Comes Under Ntsb Fire
The US Federal Aviation Administration has cleared the Robinson R44’s compliance with certification requirements and the Robinson Helicopter Company standards of design, manufacture and quality control assurance, after conducting a Special Certification Review (SCR) of the four seat piston helo at the bequest of the National Transportation Safety Board. Just days later the NTSB called for a review into the design of the R22’s main rotor and control system.
The NTSB’s call for an R44 SCR followed the crash of an R44 shortly after takeoff from El Monte Airport in California in July 1993, where cracking in the cyclic stick was identified as a possible cause. The SCR investigation looked at the R44 design drawings, stress analysis, technical reports and fatigue tests used to show the type’s compliance with certification requirements, and Robinson’s manufacturing processes and quality control procedures.
