Ansett Nz “Cash Positive”
Ansett New Zealand’s operations are “cash positive” says an Ansett spokesman but he will not say whether the airline has turned around a seven year run of losses — estimated at some $NZ200 million. Ansett Australia public affairs manager Peter Young said before the “cash positive” statement that the New Zealand operations are “looking better and better”. Mr Young declined to give details on how Ansett New Zealand was cash positive but said it was still not profitable. A cash positive position is based on a balance between opening and closing cash and does not necessarily mean a trading profit, which takes into account non trading items such as depreciation. In the year to June 30 1993, Ansett New Zealand lost $NZ32.7m. Its 1993-94 result is due shortly. Mr Young says Ansett New Zealand’s 1993-94 revenue, profitability, passenger numbers and market share are all up.
Things must be good for the airline — it has donated nearly two tonnes of surplus staff uniforms to Bosnian civil war victims. The clothes, worth more than $NZ100,000 when they were issued seven years ago when Ansett New Zealand took off, include skirts, blouses, jackets, trousers, shirts and knitwear. The 3600 garments — worn by frontline staff at airports, Golden Wing lounges and travel shops — became surplus when a new staff wardrobe was distributed. World Vision will distribute the clothes in Bosnia. The clothing was sent to Australia and included in some of the 14 containers carrying canned foods, medical items and other supplies recently donated by Australian companies.
