Just some of the 2600 R22 helicopters built to date. Whilst one of the world's most successful helicopters, statistics show that many will be involved in accidents due almost entirely to lack of adequate post qualification pilot training.

Robinson Helicopter Safety Course Addresses High R22 Accident Rate
Alarming as it may sound, of the 350 Robinson R22 helicopters sold in Australia, 129 have been written off in accidents so far, and over 25 of the remaining 220 are expected to be involved in an accident in the next twelve months. Yet as this article will show, it is not the fault of the helicopter but rather one of pilot training. The sobering facts as to the accident rate served as an introduction to a recent four day Robinson Helicopter Safety course recently conducted by Aerostar Aviation in Sydney. Together with 34 other participants all involved in R22 operations, both commercial and private, I attended the course to find out at first hand what is being done in an attempt to reduce what is clearly an unacceptable accident rate.
Gary Ticehurst, the President of the Helicopter Association of Australia, in giving the opening address pointed out that the industry lacks an intra-communication structure and by its commercial nature tends to be secretive. However as the accident rate clearly indicated, there was a need for a safety course, and the HAA welcomed and endorsed the initiative of Aerostar Aviation in setting it up. In concluding, he reminded the participants that success in the industry and perhaps more fundamentally, staying alive depended on the right attitude, a professional approach and sound airmanship.
