Raaf Preparing to Accept 15 G Models to Boost F-111 Fleet
Royal Australian Air Force planning is well under way to prepare for the acceptance of the 15 surplus United States Air Force F-111G model strike jets over the next few months. Ferry flights from the US to RAAF Amberley in south east Queensland will start in September or October, and finish in either December or January. The actual dates depend on how quickly the Mach 2+ twin engined swing wing planes can be prepared at McClellan Air Force Base on the US West Coast for the long trans Pacific flight legs.
A special RAAF team led by Group Captain John Kentish, Director, F-111 Projects, has been, and will continue to work on the acquisition, and other aspects of its and the avionics upgrade programme which has already commenced on the current squadron aircraft. It is not envisaged that a third squadron will be formed.
