Prime Minister Keating’s sudden decision to bite the bullet and merge Qantas and Australian and follow up with a sale of 100% of the new carrier caught more than just his caucus by surprise.
Indeed, though most of the aviation industry had been promotingthe long termlogic of this line for some time (referJune A A Reece), the ultimate simplicity of how the final decision was made was stunning to say the least considering that this decision should have been taken years ago at a time when, for a number of reasons, both carriers would have been more highly valued than they presently are.
