RNZAF Choice Is the Macchi
The Air Force has homed in on the Aermacchi MB339C as the advanced jet trainer to replace its increasingly crack prone Strikemasters. Defence Minister Mr Bob Tizard made a Christmas announcement that formal negotiations had been authorised to take place with the Italian company for the supply of up to 18 of these aircraft.
Meanwhile (as the move suggests), a proposal to combine with the RAAF in a joint pilot training system has been dropped. While no formal announcement was made, an RNZAF source told AA that “an extensive study had found no cost benefits or training advantages” could be obtained under such a scheme.
