Update – BAe 146
British Aerospace 146-300
Every airliner has a certain primary marketing virtue that its opponents find difficult to match. Britain’s only jet airliner, the 146, boasts an Incredibly low noise signature, good field performance and a beautiful five-abreast interior – all marketing assets that will be even more apparent on their latest offering, the stretched -300.
The 146 has been a good sales vehicle for BAe with presently some 70 in operation worldwide. To date the type has logged almost a quarter million flight hours with 11 operators including Ansett in Australia. In that period about the only real problem has been with engine reliability. The situation with the Avco Lycoming ALF502R-5 is well known and is, we are assured by both BAe and Avco, well under control with most of the bearing problems now sorted out. Avco of course have put a lot into the 146 programme. They build the wings in addition to supplying four engines per airframe, which is certainly an envious situation to be in on any aircraft and particularly one that is now slated for an increase in production from a mere 28 airframes to 40 annually.
