Getting the Sea Kings Back to Sea
The Government’s decision more than a year ago not to acquire another aircraft carrier to replace HMAS Melbourne has meant that the Navy’s eight Sea King anti-submarine warfare helicopters are not being fully utilised as earlier envisaged. To many that is a waste of a resource worth around $100 million.
But the Royal Australian Navy is making the best it can out of the circumstances and is using the six Sea King Mk 50s and two relatively new Sea King Mk 50As primarily for training, and occasional detachments to join in maritime exercises close to the Australian East Coast.
