Aircraft Census Provides Interesting Insight Into the Use of Corporate Aircraft
The July edition of Interavia magazine contained an interesting supplement on the international corporate aircraft population. Prepared with the co-operation of Aviation Data Services of Wichita the report reveals that there are no less than 12,700 turboprop and jet corporate aircraft in service compared with 7800 in airline livery.
North America, not surprisingly, is home of the majority with some 9367 such aircraft registered as at April this year. Europe on the other hand has just over one thousand corporate aircraft split fairly evenly between 491 jets and 514 turboprops with England being home to the largest fleet with Over 200 aircraft Of the jet manufacturers, Gates Learjet is still the international leader. Gates holds a healthy 24% of the market with a total of 1309 aircraft delivered as at April. Cessna, despite its relatively late run, comes a strong second with 21% market share and some 1172 airframes delivered till April. Cessna’s deliveries are split between 662 Citation Is, 482 Citation Ils and 28 Citation IIIs.
France is well represented by Falcon Jet with a total of 704 aircraft produced including 100 Falcon 10/100s, 370 Falcon 20/200s and 142 of the trijet Model50. British Aerospace has just over 500 125 aircraft in service while Gulfstream has 364 made up of 249 Glls and 125 Gills, while orders and options of the Rolls Royce Tay-powered GIV are said to already exceed 100 units! And while production ceased in 1981, there are still 402 North American Sabreliners in action including several dozen used by the USAF and soon to be replaced by Lear 358. There are also 254 Westwinds including the original batch of Commodore Jet aircraft and 168 of the four-engined Lockheed Jetstar, most survivors of which are either re-engined Garrett-powered aircraft or C-140s in USAF colours and also due to be replaced by Lears. Canadair has till April delivered 102 Challengers made up of 82 Avco Lycoming-powered Model 600s and 20 GE-powered 6018 though most 1983/84 sales have been specifically for the 601.
