US GA Production in 1983 Falls to an All Time Low:
GAMA reports that 1983 US General Aviation aircraft production fell to an all-time low of 2891 units valued at $US1.5 billion. It is not since the early fifties that such a small number of airframes were built in one year and compares badly with the industry high achieved in 1978 when 17,811 aircraft were turned out from America’s GA facilities. While numbers have declined at least the quality of a sale has improved in terms of cost per unit shipped. This is mirrored by the fact that 82% of 1983 production was for turbofan turboprop powered aircraft.
For 1984 GAMA are predicting an increase in overall sales and a further strengthening of the market. Export-wise, US officials are still hampered by the high relative value of the Greenback which is making US-produced goods an expensive import in most countries of the world, Australia being no exception where our dollar has fallen in value, vis a vis the Greenback by as much as a third in the past three years. GAMA estimate 1984 shipments of some 3245 aircraft, a net increase of nearly a quarter with billing having risen to $US1.7 billion, an increase of 16% reflecting a higher production rate for the piston-engined segment of the market. Breakup of deliveries in 1983 was: jet-powered, 142 aircraft; turboprop, 321 aircraft, piston twins, 417, and single-engine piston-powered aircraft, 1811. Only 20% of the total US production was destined for export while overseas-built corporate jets accounted for 43% of sales made in the US in this class of aircraft
