RAAF Orion Severely Damaged by Fire:
On January 27th, 1984, a P-38 Orion from No. 11 Squadron, Edinburgh was severely damaged by fire while undergoing routine maintenance. The Orion was fortunately parked on the tarmac and thus no related facilities or nearby aircraft were damaged in the fire which is believed to have been triggered off by an electrical fault. The RAAF is in the process of conducting an inquiry into the accident and has yet to assess whether or not the aircraft will be salvaged The P-3B was due to be replaced by new P-3Cs over the next few years and thus its refurbishment may not be cost efficient.
USAF F-111s to Be Upgraded:
The USAF have budgeted$US1.1billionover a six year period to upgrade 1ts fleet of 381F/FB-111 strike aircraft. Primary update will be the addition of a General Electric APG-67 digital radar of similar type as that used on the Northrop F-20 Tigershark. This will replace a variety of original radars that are nowadays becoming increasingly difficult to support. The F-111 update will also improve the Terrain Following capability with the addition of an internally mounted variant of the Lantirn system. Other modifications will include a revised weapon/nav computer, combined radar altimeter, integrated comm/nav/ IFF system and a multifunction display set. The programme is scheduled to commence in 1985 and terminate by 1991. It is not known at this stage if the RAAF will upgrade some of the referred-to systems in concert with the USAF programme,
