DC-8 Series Seventy Airborne
Series 70 First Flight
The first re-engined McDonnell Douglas DC-8 Series 71 recently began a 6-month flight test program with a 5-hour maiden flight.
Equipped with its quiet and fuel-efficient CFM56 engines, the sleek, four-engine jetliner belonging to United Airlines is the first of more than 135 DC-8s earmarked for the re-engining program directed by CAMMACORP of El Segundo, California.
McDonnell Douglas has responsibility for engineering, engine installation, flight testing and certification of the series 70 DC-8s. Grumman Aerospace produces the engine nacelles and Garrett AirResearch certification of the Series 71 for airlines. Operations will be conducted at Douglas Aircraft Company’s Yuma, Arizona flight test facility. Certification flight testing for Series 72 and 73 DC-8s is slated to begin at Yuma later this December following engine installation at the McDonnell Douglas plant. The CFM56 engines, produced by CFM International, a joint company of SNECMA of France and General Electric, USA, have completed a series of initial test flights. A version of the CFM56 was successfully test-flown on the McDonnell Douglas YC-15 STOL {Short Take-off and Landing) prototype cargo transport produced for the US Air Force.
