Update – BAe-146
British Aerospace has taken a gamble with the BAe 146.
Originally cancelled fourteen months after project go-ahead in 1974, the 146 design represents an investment by BAe in the order of $A700m, therefore success in this program will not only provide many additional jobs at BAe but also provide the company with a viable long-term airliner project to ultimately replace the BAC111 and augment 125 productions. The gamble naturally comes from the high cost of initial development inherent in any aircraft program which in this case is associated with a very small order book at the time of writing.
