Dissimilar Air Combat Training

Jim Thorn Investigates a Revolution in Realism Pioneered by the Dissimilar Air Combat Training Squadrons of the USAF & USN.
The legendary Pappy Boyington once said, “The air battle is not necessarily won at the time of the battle. The winner may have been decided by the amount of time, energy, thought, and training an individual has previously accomplished in an effort to increase his ability as a fighter pilot”.
That immortal statement was made at a time when Boyington’s crack USMC squadron, the Black Sheep, was outscoring rival Marine units in the Pacific theatre as a direct result of Boyington’s particularly dedicated interesting advanced fighter tactics. Boyington himself went on to down 25 Japanese aircraft to ably prove the validity of his doctrine.
The second World War had passed, Korea heralded the era of jet-to-jet combat at speeds unheard of one decade earlier. And while the Sabre was busy building up an impressive 10:1 kill ratio against the better performing MiG 15, back at the Pentagon (and most other Western defence establishments) the bright boys were clearing the way for the air-to-air missile. “The introduction of the missile, both air to air and surface to air, will clearly make the manned fighter, particularly with gun armament, like the mere bow and arrow upon the arrival of the crossbow in the Middle Ages. ” So said the majority of well-meaning politicians and defence scientists stretching from Washington to London.
