Hobart Airport has reached a major milestone in its terminal upgrade project with the opening of a new arrivals area.

The completed arrivals area features a new U-shaped baggage claim carousel, as well as a Tasmania-designed outdoor forecourt. According to Hobart Airport CEO Norris Carter, the airport’s terminal expansion is now two-thirds complete, with new departure gates having opened earlier this year.

“The project will ultimately double the size of the terminal, providing more space, more choice of food and retail, and more jobs for Tasmanians. The opening of our new arrivals area is an exciting moment for Tasmania as the terminal expands to meet growing demand,” he said.

“It features more baggage claim space, a new arrivals exit with easier access to the new car rental offices, and a welcoming outdoor forecourt inspired by Tasmania’s unique landscape.

“As part of the works, one existing baggage carousel has been taken offline to be upgraded and expanded, while the new 85 metre U-belt carousel is designed to improve flow and support increased passenger numbers during the busy school holiday period.

“The outdoor forecourt has been designed by Tasmanian landscape architects Playstreet and draws inspiration from Tasmania’s natural environment to create a distinctly local welcome for visitors arriving in the state.”

According to Miriam Shevland, the forecourt is “designed as a welcoming journey through Tasmania’s landscapes”.

“In the rainforest zone, the planters are underlit to subtly evoke bioluminescence, adding depth and atmosphere after dark,” she said.

“The movement of different paving types helps guide people through the space, but overall, the design is about more than wayfinding, it’s intended to reflect Tasmania’s rugged coastlines and natural environments, and create a calm, inviting arrival experience that connects visitors to Tasmania from the moment they land.”

Hobart Airport’s master plan includes $200 million to overhaul its terminal. The current terminal was designed for 1.5 million passengers per year and currently handles around 3 million, with forecasts of 3.5 million by 2030.

Works have also included a $130 million runway overhaul that was completed last year, allowing it to handle larger aircraft such as the Boeing 787 and Airbus A350.

Previous works completed in 2018 extended the main runway to 2,727m, allowing for larger aircraft to and from the Asia-Pacific and Antarctica, at $40 million.

The upgrades are expected to be completed by early 2027.
