The Mooney cabin is surrounded by an alloy-steel roll-bar cage for occupant protection. A continuous main wing spar runs from wingtip to wingtip, and is far stronger than the USFAA requirements for light aircraft. The landing gear has no oleos or hydraulics to maintain, it is all electric for smooth operation. Flaps are also electric with infinite settings from zero to 33 degrees extension. All 201 controls are actuated by push-pull rods rather than pulleys and cables for smoother more positive control.
AADR Airtest: Mooney’s Thrifty 201
US Plane of the Year in 1978, the Mooney 201 is currently winning hearts and sales in Australia – and not only by virtue of the fact that it can turn in 1mph/1hp.
It represents the high point of dedicated work by Mooney’s Eng_ineering VP Roy Lopresti’s team, a breakthrough in DOCs and energy-saving, major modifications to engine induction and exhaust systems plus a lot of cabin cleaning-up.
Lopresti’s group, given a capital T Task by financial saviour Republic Steel, was given· a terse order following Republic’s 1973 rescue of the Texas-based company; “Improve . . . boost cruise without hiking the dollar input”.
