The Trainer Choice
Macchi, Hawk or CASA?
The 1977-78 period will see quite a few Defence Depart ment si natures put to aircraft procurement contracts, one of these will be for a new jet trainer to equip the RAAF and RAN.
Fortunately for the evaluation team, the choice of a Macchi 326H replacement will be much more simple than that of the TFF purchase. A light jet trainer after all is designed to be a relatively simple article in order to carry out its func tion of turning novice pilots into jet jockeys. It must be economical to purchase and operate over a period of 15 or more years and nowadays it must also possess ahandy ground attack potential.
For the RAAF there are three contenders who equally measure up as first rate design objective aircraft for our ser vices. From Britain comes the Hawker Siddeley Hawk, from Spain comes the CASA 101 and from Italy emerges the Macchi 339.
