Sydney Airport’s domestic passenger numbers in April were still only at 86 per cent of pre-COVID levels, despite The Flying Kangaroo significantly increasing services on the Golden Triangle nationwide.
Captain Tony Lucas, president of The Australian and International Pilots Association, said the decision illustrates a failure of fleet planning over the last five years.
The Flying Kangaroo said on Friday it will add one million seats to its overseas network over 12 months from October, and will target a return to pre-pandemic capacity by next March.
The Airwork-operated plane was forced to turn back to Darwin in November 2021 after the guarded cargo/depress switch – usually used to assist with removal of smoke in the main cargo deck during a smoke event – was left on by a maintenance engineer during pre-flight preparation, who had used it to try to cool the flight deck.
The low-cost carrier will close boarding gates 20 minutes prior to departure on all domestic and international flights, with check-in and bag drop now to close 40 minutes before departure on flights within Australia and New Zealand, and 60 minutes before departure for international flights.
