The delivery delays come as Boeing continues to face scrutiny over the safety of the 737 MAX family following the mid-air blowout of a door plug on board an Alaska Airlines MAX 9 in January.

The project, which received $9 million in funding divided between state and federal governments and $3 million from the City of Greater Bendigo, features a terminal four times larger than the old building, a 183-space car park, and an apron capable of accommodating two 70-seat aircraft.

The planemaker has attributed the sea of red ink to a fall in 737 deliveries, as well as the grounding of the 737 MAX 9 after a door plug blew out on an Alaska Airlines plane at the start of the year. Boeing was barred by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) from ramping up MAX production.
