The space agency said returning Sunita “Suni” Williams and Barry “Butch” Wilmore onboard Starliner was too risky as engineers still hadn’t fully deduced what went wrong with its thrusters.
At a briefing on Wednesday, NASA pushed back the SpaceX Crew-9 launch from mid-August to late September, a move that could allow the two astronauts to return to Earth in the rival vehicle.
The launch provider added that it had earmarked “a few potential sites” and would leverage its existing orbital launch technology but provided few other details.
In a LinkedIn post announcing the news, Maria MacNamara gave no reason for her exit while the Space Industry Association of Australia (SIAA) has yet to issue a public statement on the departure.
Boeing is facing more criticism of its standards after it revealed that its Starliner spacecraft has indefinitely delayed its return to Earth after docking with the International Space Station.
