Australia’s defence sector gathered in Canberra to celebrate excellence across industry, academia and innovation, with University of NSW researcher Oleksandra Molloy taking home the 2026 Excellence Award at the eighth annual Australian Defence Industry Awards.

The new Arkeus defence technology facility is expected to build AI-powered sensing systems that serve as the eyes and brains of autonomous platforms for Australian and allied defence customers. It will increase Arkeus’ manufacturing capability by 20 times.

The Quantum Systems Vector AI was used to “identify targets in depth and enable drone and artillery strikes on enemy positions”, according to Defence, which says it can provide real-time environment mapping and AI-enhanced object tracking and detection while flying more than 60 kilometres.
