The training program will see a new intake of pilots will this week undergo the final stages of their training to fly the fifth-gen fighter at RAAF Base Amberley and Rockhampton.
Last year alone, 100 current or former RAAF personnel suffered some sort of “suicide-related event” – the highest count of all three services.
The ‘graduation’ was marked by flypasts of Pilatus PC-21 and Hawk 127 training aircraft and a parade led by the Western Australian Police Pipe Band on 4 November.
This follows Australia and South Korea’s agreement to increase interoperability between air forces, with both signing a mid-air refuelling agreement earlier in the year.
Speaking at the annual Sydney Institute dinner, the Defence Minister also said Australia must deploy nuclear-powered submarines and “project force and power”.
The training saw the crew don night vision goggles in an environment that was pitch black with no moon, strong winds and a ship that was pitching and rolling with the waves.
