The Royal Flying Doctor Service south eastern section (RFDSSE) has unveiled its first aircraft donning the organisation’s new national livery.
A preliminary ATSB report into the incident west of Norseman in WA, which killed pilot Hugh Sterle, also suggests its engine was producing power at impact.
The organisers of the event, and its major sponsor The Lottery Office, are now encouraging new teams to get involved in the race, which will take place from August 29 – September 11, 2022.
The GA-8 landed 300 metres further than intended, leading to the aircraft becoming damaged and its landing gear detaching. Neither the pilot nor seven passengers were injured.
Notably, Pipistrel's electric light aircraft, Velis Electro, became the world's first electric aircraft to receive full type-certification from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency in 2020, and remains the only of its kind to hold this certification.
The renamed Air Race World Championship will arrive on 18, 19 and 20 November 2022 and is expected to attract 150,000 fans to watch it live.
