The addition of the 20-metre aerobridge comes as the airport says it will open the new terminal in four months’ time. The multi-million-dollar upgrades were originally slated to be completed last year, but were delayed to this year due to “supply chain issues”.
While routes, aircraft, and other details have yet to be confirmed, the news means that Qantas Domestic will not operate major capital city routes out of WSI from the start, likely leaving those services to Jetstar and possibly to QantasLink’s growing A220 fleet.
The airport in the Northern Territory’s Barkly region, operated by Airport Development Group, may see growth of up to 100,000 passengers per year under a new concept plan to convert it into an “aviation and accommodation hub” for regular passenger and FIFO travel.
Tuesday saw the first aircraft to use the taxiway, Jetstar A321 VH-VWX on flight JQ514 to Sydney, greeted with a water-cannon salute. The 800-metre taxiway runs parallel to the airport’s east-west (09/27) runway, and was constructed over 11 months with 43,000m3 of concrete pavement.
The new brandmark, resembling two overlapping ribbons in the shape of a “B”, replaces the existing logo used since 2013, but retains its “jet stream” inspiration.
The 23-year-old, fitness influencer Preslie Ginoski, fronted court on Wednesday after previously using his position to enter a restricted area and record video of himself posing shirtless inside the turbine of a parked aircraft, then uploading the footage to the internet. He has been fined $2,400 after pleading guilty to two charges.
