Luke Gosling, special envoy for defence, veterans affairs and Northern Australia, recently travelled to Troughton Island and Mungalalu North Kimberley Airport in the region.
The test on Wednesday was part of the airport’s preparations to open the refurbished international terminal, which will serve Jetstar’s year-round flights to Bali from October with the aim of also attracting other overseas carriers.
The new service to Auckland will commence from “mid-2027” and has been supplemented by funding from both the NSW government and the airport itself.
The document, which covers available facilities and infrastructure; strategic planning context; sustainability; and forward plans, provides a “cohesive roadmap for the airport precinct” as demand for aviation in Sydney is set to double over the next 25 years, said WSI CEO Simon Hickey.

Speaking at the airport on Wednesday, the Transport Minister said that in order to minimise noise impact on surrounding communities, reciprocal runway operations (RRO) will be prioritised at night, with a specific noise abatement procedure employed, when it is safe to do so.
