Passengers on two inbound Qantas flights to Sydney – QF144 from Auckland, and QF122 from Queenstown – are now able to access the Australia Digital Travel Declaration (ATD), following a successful trial period at Brisbane Airport.
Funded by $70 million from the airport itself and $60 million from the federal government, the runway upgrades – which began last year – were completed in three stages, and could open up flights to Asian destinations within the next few years, said Norris Carter, chief executive of the airport.
As part of the Security Management Systems certification process, IATA visited the airport on-site in June, and conducted a full audit of its approach to aviation security, with Brisbane being certified at the highest level of entry.
All arrivals are now entering through the new terminal as of this week, ahead of the previously-scheduled August opening date. It comes as Newcastle prepares for a full opening of the terminal to accommodate the beginning of international services in October.
Ahead of his appearance at the Australian Aviation Summit, Andrew Warrender argued that key developments of this regulatory shift are still unfolding.
However, it conversely recorded its best-ever performance for international passengers during the same period, with numbers up more than 8.3 per cent on the previous year.
