China Southern has announced the introduction of twice-daily flights between Guangzhou and Melbourne from October this year, in a move welcomed by Melbourne Airport CEO Chris Woodruff.
The airline’s decision to increase the number of Melbourne services comes less than a year after China Southern started daily flights to Melbourne in November, before which it had previously operated only three flights per week.

“China is our number one long haul market and as Victoria’s international aviation gateway, we are pleased to be able to support the strengthening of Victoria’s tourism, education and business relationship with China,” Woodruff said.
“The new double daily service means that Victorians now have improved connections to the biggest domestic network in China as well as improved connections to favourite global destinations,” he added.
According to Melbourne Airport figures, a total of 386,118 Chinese passengers passed through the airport in 2010/11, up 26.2 per cent on the previous year.
