Pictured at Santa Monica in the US, prior to its ill-fated delivery flight to New Zealand is Consolidated PBYCatalina the Coral Route' (refer text). The Catalina departed California on December 18, and was to have undertaken a brief tour of New Zealand before sett/mg home. Eng,ne trouble forced the crew to ditch in the Pacific, the classic amphibious sinking shortly afterwards. (Gordon Reid)

Kiwi Catalina Lost
Catalina N5404J is sadly no more.
During its ferry flight from the United States the aircraft suffered an engine failure. The aircraft was put down on the Pacific Ocean about 300 kilometres northeast of Christmas Island but sank shortly after. The crew of seven took to a liferaft and were picked up by ship on January 16.
