Safety Audits Hold Significant Potential for Reducing GA Accident Rate

The two tier aviation regulation system allows for a deregulated marketplace, free of red tape regulations which are not pertinent to all operators.

Aviation operators are afforded a greater latitude of discretion and can make decisions more appropriate to their particular operation and ‘cultural’ requirements. This philosophy is being embraced by the aviation industry, yet safety at a grass roots level requires further emphasis.

Traditional safety efforts prior to deregulation have been reactive in nature and aimed at the aviation industry as a whole. This afforded smaller operators little opportunity to regulate their own safety. Post deregulation, and in line with a two tier regulation philosophy, aviation safety also needs to be tailored to the individual requirements of operators. The intense competition of a deregulated marketplace will no longer allow operators to rely solely on the results of a reactive approach to aviation safety and hazard elimination. An accident, or even a well publicised incident, may be the catalyst that heralds a company’s economic demise, as we have seen recently with one commuter operator.
