Building Your Own Kit Aircraft – Is It a Practical Proposition?

Ever dreamed about building your own aircraft?

Recently I had the pleasure of spending a couple of hours with those well known sport aviation identities, Jake and Barbara Jansen of Canberra who are doing just that. After a lot of hard work, they are now well on the way to completing their Glasair II-S after setting themselves the target of having it airborne in time for Mangalore ’94.

The essential question I wanted to put to them was why? I knew that they had been the owners of a Robin R2160 in which they had won numerous competitions. Why sell the aircraft in which they had achieved so much success, to spend the next three years putting a kit aircraft together? The answer was relatively simple, about the time they were looking for a faster, more up to date aircraft, they received an offer for their Robin which was too good to refuse. Since their aircraft was then six years old and coming up for a major, and in the need of refurbishment, they decided to sell.
