CAA’s Materials Evaluation Facility

Caa’s Materials Evaluation Facility – A Cost Effective Investment in Aviation Safety

The spectre of aircraft failure and stress fatigue weighs heavily in the minds of every safety conscious flying operation around the world.

The effects of structural failure are quite often catastrophic, and therefore the need for analysis of the these failures is critical. This analysis is a responsibility of the world’s airworthiness authorities, and in Australia this is performed by the Civil Aviation Authority’s Materials Evaluation Facility.

The MEF’s primary function is to investigate and analyse aircraft failures for its parent organisation the Civil Aviation Authority and as such is part of the Directorate of Air Safety and Regulation (DASR). MEF also performs much work for BASI, helping this body to investigate and identify the causes of aircraft accident and incidents. Following the creation of the CAA in 1988, the Material Evaluation Facility’s services were also made commercially available to aviation and other related industries.
