McDonnell Douglas MD-90

 There is more than a small touch of irony about the airliner that now bears the MD-90 name.

Previously the MD-90 family was initiated in the mid 1980s to take advantage of the dramatic improvements in fuel economy promised by the revolutionary UDF Unducted Fans in light of the burgeoning fuel prices at that time. With its side mounted engines, the MD-80 on which it was to be based was easily adapted to UDF power, which would have allowed Douglas to snare a great percentage of lucrative UDF sales before its nearest competitors were to appear, placing the company in an unassailable position. However, this was not to be as despite offering fuel savings in the order of 40%, the family was looked over when fuel prices rescinded and inter- est waned in the operationally untested propfan.
