The first production Boeing 777rudder, manufactured by ASTA, has now been installed in a flight control test rig in Seattle. Transported halfway around the world, the rudder has been faultlessly attached to US made hinges and trailing edge pieces. Standing more than 10 metres high, the composite rudder is the largest single piece rudder used in a Boeing commercial aircraft and yet weighs just 220kg. After stiffness, vibration and flutter testing in the 'iron bird' test rig the rudder will be installed in a static test aircraft in the new year. (Boeing)

Saab 2000 Certification Delayed:

Early customers for the Saab 2000 regional turboprop face hefty delivery delays and the operational and scheduling problems associated with that due to the aircraft’s certification being put back a year while ongoing longitudinal stability problems are solved.

Certification is now planned for the end of 1994, the problems necessitating the installation of a powered elevator control system in place of the original mechanical system which lacks sufficient authority and restricts centre of gravity range. Elevators of increased chord and with geared servo tabs have been fitted during testing, and although these helped in the low speed/high power/missed approach case, they reduced longitudinal stability at high speed.
