Eurofighter 2000- Reinventing the Wheel?
The much awaited Eurofighter 2000 will enter military service a quarter century after the F-15 Eagle, and yet it is an aircraft that will be only marginally more capable than its much older cousin.
While the Eurofighter 2000 will possess a number of benefits over the Eagle and all other current generation fighters, its long gestation period and enormous and ever growing cost hardly justifies the increases in capabilities that this aircraft represents.
Development
This most protracted and painful development programme can be traced back to the seventies, when the Royal Air Force (RAF) was looking at a long term replacement for both its Jaguars and Harrier GR. 3s, possessing high payload range capability, STOVL field performance and, influenced by F-16 flying displays, good agility for close in air-to-air missions. At around the same time Germany had been studying designs for a replacement for its F-4F Phantoms in the air-to-air role. At this early stage combining the design concepts into a single European fighter (at one stage known as the European Combat Aircraft) proved futile for a number of reasons, although by 1982 however MBB, BAe and Aeritalia had to develop a joint design known as the Agile Combat Aircraft (ACA).
