A better way . . .
The Life Flight Trust
Forty-four years ago a young plumber called Peter Button watched in horror as the Lyttleton to Wellington ferry, the Wahine, sank at the entrance to Wellington Harbour. Despite frantic rescue efforts, 52 people lost their lives only a few hundred metres off the coast of Seatoun, in what was to be New Zealand’s worst modern maritime disaster.
It seemed impossible so many lives could be lost so close to shore and Button turned to his friend and said: “There must be a better way.” Today Peter’s vision has taken form in the Life Flight Trust, a phenomenally successful charitable trust providing helicopter rescue and air ambulance services based at Wellington and Auckland.
